Joyce Lowery
Artist Statement

I see my work as a continuing conversation between the person who sees my work and the images that appear as I
apply the paint in a playful manner. Using mixed water media, I focus on color and texture from a variety of sources. I
just reach out and use whatever is at hand, mostly watercolor and acrylics but sometimes crayons, stamps or extra bits
of paper or fabric. I never know where I may end up. Remembered scenes or personal images often influence my
finished painting. As I attempt to vary the surface, which may be paper, canvas or anything else I might fancy, I play until
I develop a relationship with the appearing images. I may see people, animals or abstract shapes. Play comes first,
then structure, and then play again. Since I can identify most readily with women and their feelings, my recent work has
been focused on the things we all experience. I want to draw people into a world where color, texture and ideas
converge.
