|Artist of the Month
As a child, I always wanted to draw but I did not think I could. No one told me to
look at an object and draw it. I thought it had to be something I could do from my
thoughts and it just was not there. I did not consider drawings I did of the insects
I dissected or things I saw in the microscope as art. That was science.
In 1979, I sketched a barn from a magazine picture which I thought was pretty
good. That lead to my decision to go to the community college to try some art
classes to see if this was something I could actually do. I attended for two years
and then we had to move. Crafts were my focus for a few years.
In 1997, I started taking lessons in porcelain painting and fell in love with it. I am
trying to learn watercolors which I also love, but porcelain painting is my primary
art. I have been blessed to take workshops with teachers from Germany,
Portugal, Brazil, England, Japan and across the USA. I do not have a speciality
subject but my favorite is portraits. I take several workshops each year and
attend the annual porcelain painter's school at Tybee Island, GA.
I recently won first place and the President's Choice Award at the Alabama
Porcelain Painter's Guild with a bowl painted in the Nyon style. I also won
second place on a tile on which I painted gold finches and thistle and third place
on a plate with a magnolia design.
